Hunger can be quite an overwhelming issue. Statistics can be depressing. Relief efforts can be overwhelming. And seeing homeless people in our community can remind us that, no matter how much we do, hunger is a reality. Hunger is such a huge problem that it's often difficult to know how to make a difference. Unless we take hunger personally and start letting it affect us individually, we will never make a dent in the problem. Here are some things we can do to make hunger seem closer to home and spur us to action on community, regional, national and world levels.

  1. Drink only water for one week. Don't drink any coffee, soft drinks, teas or other drinks.
  2. Don't eat any snacks. If you get hungry between meals, wait until the next meal.
  3. Choose one day next week and only eat one meal.
  4. For one week, any time you have the urge to buy something to drink or eat that won't benefit you nutritionally (soft drinks, candy bars, ice cream and fast food meals) don't buy those items and instead put that money in a jar. At the end of the week, give the money to a hunger relief organization, such as Second HarvestFood Bank.
  5. Assist a local soup kitchen and volunteer to serve food to the people one day.
  6. Volunteer to sort and pack food donations at Second HarvestFood Bank.
  7. Write to Congress advocating for bills about hunger. Bread for the World can tell you which bills are currently being worked on in committees or being voted on.
