Surplus Food Program
(Food Recovery and Distribution Program/ Warehouse Recovery & Distribution/ Warehouse Distribution Program/ Warehouse Food Distribution)
Waste Not, Want Not
According to a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans waste 96 billion pounds (26%) of food each year. This waste is measured only at the retail and food service level. We know that food is wasted at every level from production to distribution.
Program Description
The Surplus Food Program is a collaboration between the Second Harvest and food manufacturers, distributors, grocery stores, brokers, and farmers located throughout our 23 parish service area in south Louisiana. The food donated is usually unmarketable (yet safe and nutritious) surplus such as close code dates, dented cans or damaged boxed food, mislabeled product, fruits and vegetables not harvested by farmers, etc. Food is donated to the Food Bank and then distributed to our member agencies to be given to those in need.
