9-A-Day Program
9-A-Day Program
Obesity and overweight issues have become increasing alarming in the United States with one in six children in the U.S. found to be “seriously overweight”. In New Orleans alone it is estimated that 60% of the city’s population is overweight while the Centers for Disease Control has found that the medical costs of issues related to obesity in the city is over 1 billion dollars.
9-A-Day the Head Start Way Pilot Program is a response to these overwhelming statistics. The program is a three tiers pilot that will continue for three years in twelve, Orleans and Jefferson parish Head Start sites. The objective of the program is to increase produce consumption and nutrition knowledge among the students, staff, and parents while also increasing access to fresh produce.
Each tier has incremental levels of intervention ranging from receiving just produce deliveries to full intervention of produce deliveries, nutrition newsletters with recipes and nutrition curriculum with materials. At the conclusion of the pilot, the program will be evaluated to see which level of intervention succeeded in changing the students’, staff and parents’ eating habits, knowledge and attitude toward fresh produce.
