Second Harvest Food Bank Announces Launch of Senior Brown Bag Program to Assist Elderly At-Risk of Hunger

On February 8th, Second Harvest launched its new Senior Brown Bag program that will focus on providing nutritional support to the elderly population throughout southern Louisiana. Seniors who currently rely on the services of the Mercy Endeavors Senior Center (1017 St. Andrew Street, New Orleans) were the first participants of this program and each received a food box of nutritionally appropriate items.

The Senior Brown Bag Program is designed to provide nutritional support to seniors facing food insecurity in this climate of uncertainty. Specifically, the program will supplement existing senior meal services that are already helping mitigate hunger, namely the Meals on Wheels programs operating through localized senior centers.  Like the Kids Lagniappe Packs program, the food bank will deliver a free box of easy-to prepare, nutritionally appropriate food every Friday to low-income seniors in cooperation with participating senior centers. Each box will contain roughly 12 low-sodium and low-sugar food items, including fresh produce when available.  The program will first be implemented in Orleans Parish, with room for expansion as support for the program increases.  A newsletter will also be included, offering information about nutrition and services for the elderly.
