Baptist Community Ministries donates $11.6M to N.O. nonprofits

NEW ORLEANS - Baptist Community Ministries, a private foundation in Louisiana, said it contributed $11.6 million to New Orleans-area nonprofits last year.

BCM said it has renewed its commitment to the New Orleans region and is focusing on four areas to help the post-hurricane recovery: health, education, public safety and governmental oversight.

“After the hurricanes, BCM came back energized and even more dedicated to providing much needed resources to organizations which are working at the heart of the city," said BCM board Chairwoman Janice Foster. "Through BCM grants, we are helping these institutions bridge the gap between recovery efforts and recovery dollars.â€

2007 grant recipients included the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank, St. Tammany Nurse Family Partnership, the Alliance for Justice, Kingsley House and the Greater New Orleans Immunization Network.

BCM program directors devoted an estimated 3,300 hours in their areas of expertise. The directors work with the nonprofits that are helping the recovery.

"The program directors at BCM are the heartbeat of the organization. Their passion and commitment for these programs are what allows BCM to be a crucial resource to the nonprofits we support," said BCM President and CEO Byron Harrell.

“BCM is a foundation which takes pride in providing research-based solutions to solving problems in our community," he said. "We trust our nonprofit partners to help us carry out our mission by directly serving the public.â€

BCM grant applications for 2008 will be accepted until March 15. For more information, go to www.bcm.org/grant_guidelines.htm.
