Second Harvest Rising To The Challenge of Katrina & RItaWhen Hurricane Katrina made landfall early Monday morning, August 29, 2005, Second Harvest Food Bank's New Orleans office and warehouse were completely deserted, its staff evacuated and scattered all over the country. Within forty-eight hours of landfall, Second Harvest, with a skeleton crew of employees and volunteers, began working out of the offices of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, then later out of an old Wal-Mart building in Baker, Louisiana. While the Federal Government floundered, Second Harvest was one of the first responders to the disaster, providing food and water that would eventually be taken to such crisis points as the Morial Convention Center in downtown New Orleans. Three weeks later, the Food Bank was faced with yet another challenge when Hurricane Rita came ashore and decimated the western side of Second Harvest's service territory. In the year since Katrina made landfall, Second Harvest Food Bank has distributed an unprecedented 52 million+ pounds of food product to its entire service territory, consisting of 23 southern Louisiana parishes. In a normal year preceding Katrina/Rita, Second Harvest would distribute approximately 14.2 million pounds of food product to its more than 350 partner agencies. Since Katrina, Second Harvest's distribution has increased three and a half fold while our number of network agencies has decreased significantly. And with people in the Hurricane Katrina/Rita-effected areas still struggling to rebuild their homes and their lives, Second Harvest expects this high level of distribution to continue for quite some time. Second Harvest wishes to express its deepest appreciation to all those individuals, businesses and foundations who have so generously donated their money, food and time to the Food Bank since Katrina & Rita. But the crisis isn't over. The rebuilding process is just beginning and there are still plenty of people in need of our services. Please help Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana continue the relief effort by making a donation of money, food or time. Click here to learn how! Temporary facility in an old Wal-Mart loacted in Baker, Louisiana.
