A
Place of Peace, Health, and
Opportunity
for
Hungry Children

Kids
Café New Orleans is based on a national program of
America
s
Second Harvest responding to childhood hunger at the neighborhood
level. Directed by Second Harvest Food Bank of
Greater New Orleans and Acadiana
, Kids Café
New Orleans has a unique local twist. As one 9-year-old member of
the Kids Café board said during the planning phase, We want
to learn to eat at a restaurant.
Kid's
Cafe provides a safe place for children living in low-income areas
of the city to get a nutritious meal, hospitality industry training,
and other educational opportunities to help open their worlds to
new possibilities for personal growth and achievement.
Children
eat in a restaurant-style setting and participate in all aspects
of the programming. Each site is rooted in its neighborhood with
involvement from parents, children, other adults, and organizations.
Children have the opportunity to participate in hospitality training,
therefore giving them marketable job skills for future opportunities.
At
Kids Café New Orleans, children serve as hosts, they wait tables, help in the food preparation and,
of course, enjoy a nutritious meal. Adult table monitors encourage
proper dining etiquette and friendly dinner conversation. Kids Café
New Orleans is a place beyond poverty and hunger where low-income
children enjoy a healthy and delicious meal

Volunteer!
Provide
Entertainment or Enrichment
Every
meal at the Kids Café is also a teachable moment. Short
presentations hold the guest interest and provide a dinner
theatre environment.
Volunteer
to share experiences from you career or hobby, tell an interesting
story, entertain with a talent, a skill or an activity the
kids will love it.
Be
a Table Monitor
Table
Monitors are needed to dine with youth for every meal at Kids
Café. They provide a model for etiquette, healthy eating, and dinner
conversation skills. Table monitors may volunteer weekly, monthly
or bi-monthly. Groups are welcome.
Help
Prepare and Serve
Meals
Your
church, synagogue, business or civic group can sponsor a meal and
volunteer together. While the children are encouraged to take on
the major volunteer roles of serving and cleaning up, adult help
is also needed. Professional waiters are needed to help with training,
as are kitchen help and sanitation engineers. No job is too small
at Kids Café.
